Week 2: Introduction to Metal-Ligand Interactions and Biomolecules

  • Page ID

  • A note from Dr. Haas: In this chapter you will be introduced to the simplest description of metal-ligand interactions and a brief overview of bio-molecular structure. This chapter uses HYBRID ORBITALS in the explanations. Much of what you've learned in general chemistry and organic chemistry applies the theory of hybridized orbitals to explain chemical behavior, so you should be comfortable with descriptions based on hybridized orbitals. But don't get too comfortable because hybridized orbital theory fails to explain much of transition metal chemistry. We'll be using a more advanced model in this class, starting next week. For now, we'll use hybridized orbitals because they're easy, and you're being introduced to just the basics this week.
