    CHEM 298/299 BioDivision Minutes

    11/7/17 6:30-7:45PM
    Attending:

Keren, Ryan G, Bond, Taylor, David

    Discussion:

-Thursday 11/9 Remove Fish tank water at 2PM. Ryan will take water sample. *Accomplished

-Waiting on C. Miller email to choose best food source for California Roach. *Accomplished

-Map Complex equilibrium for software. (Chemists/Sensors Coders)

-Choose Reverse Osmosis model for ~$200-$550

    Bio Division Minutes (11/3/17) 1PM-2:30PM

    Attendees:

Bond Bortman, Luis Nava, Ryan Gilardy, Peter Swensen, David, Taylor, Keren

    Disscussion:

*Alternate Fish ~ Sacremento Hitch - Roach is slightly smaller and still preferred

    POSSIBLE CALI. ROACH FOOD

A)Frozen Dehydrated Red Worms are used by Vector Control/Chris Miller – *Can use dry ice to dehydrate (Must price out $40-$300)

Dehydrated Meal Worms 5 Ib. bag can be bought for $35

    B)FLY LARVAE/AQUATIC INSECTS (i.e. Daphne)

    C)FILAMENTOUS ALGAE

D)DUCKWEED(floats on top): Issues -Block light, could clog filters and uses a lot of Nitrogen

Plan to Approach issues before next meeting:

-Keren will email Chris Miller regarding using worms other than red worms and specifics about Duckweed and Filamentous algae.

-All Bio division will research using Algae/Duckweed as food and the effects on the water chemistry + ecosystem. Pay attention to mode of metabolism, what is food source(will algae block/limit plant food), affect on pH, affect on salinity

    Inventory Items Ordered:

    -dKH Test, Reverse Osmosis

*Possibly pH and Salinity test kits for fish proof of concept if sensors are not ready

    10/24/17 BIO Division Meeting – HO 101 - 5:30-7:30PM

*MEET IN HO-101 For Rest of Semester

    Attendees:

Ryan, Keren, Vee, Taylor, David and Bond

    Discussion:

    -Discussed Bio magnification

-Further Research Method for feeding the California Roach: Keren will Follow up with Chris Miller at Vector control-Possible Field trip. Once food source(s) are selected we will do a proof of concept for fish tank and solid waste filter

Design proof of concept of bacteria substrate in water tank

*C. Roach 1-2ppm of Dissolved Oxygen needed

-Barley Wheat will be put on the back burner until we have fish food planned.

Analysis of Bio contaminants: Fish tank water and traps can be analyzed in Life Science with input from Dr. Goralka Thursday(Ryan). We will then use a grow light to see if anyother organisms flourish in the tank water with extra energy

    Order for Budget:

-Reverse Osmosis Filter (Small Boy $84.93)

-Bacteria on a substrate – Live Rock/Coral once tank is ready (24hr or less to put in system)

    -Calcium (water hardness) test kit

    10/17/17 BIO Division Meeting – L 206 - 6:30-8:30PM

*MEET IN HO-101 For Rest of Semester

    Attendees:

    Ryan, Keren and Bond

    Synopsis:

-Review use of proof of concepts and science terms

-Research Barley Wheat – Regulate pH/bacteria

    -Update needed items for Budget

-Analysis of Bio contaminants: Fish tank water and traps can be analyzed in Life Science with input from Dr. Goralka

    Consider for Budget:

-Reverse Osmosis Filter, Bacteria substrate, Barley Wheat, Calcium (water hardness) test kit
