- A molecular formula is a chemical formula of a molecular compound that shows the kinds and numbers of atoms present in a molecule of the compound.
- 4.2: Isomers
- Isomers are compounds that have the same molecular formula but different structural formula.
- 4.3: Condensed Formula and Skeletal Structures
- Condensed formulas and skeletal formula are two ways to draw organic compounds.
- 4.4: Shapes of Molecules
- Simple molecules have geometries around a central atoms such as tetrahedral, pyramidal, planar, bent, and linear.
- 4.5: Electronegativity, Bond Polarity, and Overall Polarity
- Covalent bonds can be polar or nonpolar, depending on the electronegativity difference between the atoms involved. The overall polarity of the molecule depends on the geometry of the molecule and the presence of polar bonds.
- 4.6: Intermolecular Interactions
- Compounds interact with each other through various forces: ionic and covalent bonds, dipole-dipole interactions, hydrogen bonding, and dispersion forces.
- 4.7: Functional Groups or Families of Compounds
- A functional group is defined as an atom or group of atoms within a molecule that has similar chemical properties whenever it appears in various compounds.
- 4.8: Cis-Trans Isomers (Geometric Isomers)
- Cis-trans (geometric) isomerism exists when there is restricted rotation in a molecule and there are two nonidentical groups on each doubly bonded carbon atom.
- 4.9: End of Chapter Problems
- This problem set is based on Chapter 4 topics.
