7.20: Acid-Base Extraction

( \newcommand{\kernel}{\mathrm{null}\,}\)

a) Extract the Acidic Component

To extract the acidic component, add 5% sodium hydroxide to neutral carboxylic acid and amine. Extract the amine and sodium hydroxide. Add hydrochloric acid to the sodium hydroxide solution to get a carboxylic acid. If it is solid filter, if not then extract into organic solvent and add 2 molar hydrochloric acid to get a p H of 3-4.

b) Extract the Basic Component

To extract the basic component add 5% hydrochloric acid to neutral amine. Extract the neutral and hydrochloric solution. Add sodium hydroxide to the hydrochloric solution. If the solution is solid then filter, if not then extract into the organic solvent. Use 2 molar sodium hydroxide to get a p H of 9-11.
