Why is oxygen transport important?
Dioxygen (O2) is essential for energy production by cellular respiration. O2 is reduced to water at the end of the electron transport chain (ETC) in order to generate the energy required to synthesize ATP. This is the primary energy-producing process in cells of aerobic organisms. Because O2 is essential for this process, O2 must be continually transported from the outside environment to all body cells.
