Creating tactile 3-dimensional periodic tables can allow for better understanding of these trends.
For this activity, the instructor will print out the three-dimensional periodic tables before class and pass them around your class while discussing periodic trends. The periodic tables can be reused in future years once they have been printed.
The .stl files for these periodic tables are available in the supporting information of the following publication: Journal of Chemical Education 2019, 96, 285-290, DOI: 10.1021/acs.jchemed.8b00592 (https://pubs.acs.org/doi/abs/10.1021/acs.jchemed.8b00592). The manuscript was written by Dr. Bob LeSuer of SUNY Brockport. The specific file to download is the last supplementary zipped file: “ed8b00592_si_004.zip”. Within this zip file are several options, including multiple sizes of atomic radius, ionization energy, and electron affinity, and electronegativity trends, among others.
