    SUGGESTIONS FOR FUTURE AIRLIFTS

USE A 2" DIAMETER OUTER PIPE AND 1.5" OR 1.25" INNER PIPE

GLUE PVC AND SEAL FITTING THREADS

EXPERIMENT WITH REDUCING THE INNER PIPE LENGTH BY UP TO 1/4"

    AIRLIFT PROTOTYPE TESTING - 5/19/2017

The original airlift design was evaluated for performance and rate of fluid transfer by tracking how much time it took to pump enough water to fill a marked 5 gallon bucket. A large water tank with 8 ft of depth was used as the water source.

    RESULTS:

Testing seals with soapy water exposed multiple air leaks. Testing higher pressure with dual compressors demonstrated a 'blow by' effect in which air was bubbling out the bottom of the input pipe every 2 seconds. A greater area is needed within the outer pipe where the inner pipe space pumps into water to have room for the increased amount of air needed to transfer at 120 gpm or more. Shorteining the inner pipe length by up to another 1/4" should reduce 'blow by' and increase output.

Dual_compressor_airlift.mp4 VIDEO TAKEN DURING DUAL COMPRESSOR TEST. SHOWS AIR LEAKS.

PUMP(S) AND CONDITIONS Time taken to pump five gallons Gallons per hour
EcoPlus Aquarium Pump with air leaks at inner and outer pipe seal 4.75 minutes 57 gphr.
EcoPlus with inner/outer seal glued 4.1 minutes 73 gphr.
Running traditional compressor and Ecoplus with a T-Quick connect which leaked in multiple places. 4.75 minutes 64 gphr.

SOAP AND WATER WERE APPLIED TO AREAS WITH POSSIBLE AIR LEAKS. THE DATA SHOWED A 28% INCREASE IN FLOW RATE WHEN THE SEAL BETWEEN THE INNER AND OUTER PIPES WAS GLUED. THIS PICTURES SHOW THE BUBBLES GENERATED FROM LEAKS BEFORE THIS SEAL WAS GLUED.

    OriginalLeak.jpg

THE POINT WHERE THE BRASS T THREADS INTO THE PVC END CAP PRESENTED A SIGNIFICANT AIR LEAK. FUTURE AIR LIFTS WILL NEED TO HAVE A THICKER END CAP AND PROPER THREADING. *NOTE THIS WAS A DRILLED END CAP AND THREADS DID NOT MATCH.

THE END PVC END LEAKS WITH A SINGLE PUMP AND QUICK CONNECT DESPITE THREADS BEING TAPED.

    Air Pump For Vertical Farming

    Dear VF Team,

Thank you all for your hard work and dedication, you're helping solve one of the most important problems we face today.

Check out this video of a Youtuber running several pumps with one air source.

He also has a video going over the benefits of the Air Lift Pump

Make sure to buy your plumbing parts for the air lift pump from Ashby Lumber.

This EcoPlus Pro 20 Air Pump should get the job done for a decent price of $55. You could also investing in the more powerful EcoPlus Pro 100 if you foresee expansions, up to the club and your budget. Here is the spec sheet for these pumps.

This Bicycle Pump Adapter will allow you to easily run your pumps with a bike pump in case of an emergency.

Please email me if you need anything.
    Best wishes, Ardy

    Parts:

    1” Pipe Length = X
    0.5” Pipe Length = X + 1.5”
    X ≥ 20 Inches
    0.5” Coupling Is Press Fit
    Seal With Teflon Tape0.5” Pipe
    1x1x0.5” Tee (slip, slip, thread)
    0.5” Quick Connect
    1x0.75” Bushing
    0.5” Coupling
    1" Pipe

    0.5" PVC slip cap

    Updated Part List (10/24/2017)

    2” Pipe Length = X
    1.5” Pipe Length = X + 1.5”
    X ≥ 20 Inches
    1.5” Coupling Is Press Fit
Seal With Teflon Tape 1.5” Pipe
    2x2x1.5” Tee (slip, slip, thread)
    0.5” Quick Connect
    2x1.75” Bushing
    1.5” Coupling
    2" Pipe

    1.5" PVC slip cap

Doubling the diamater of the exterior pipe should allow for increased flow potential.
