    Organic layer is on Top:

For the first extraction, 25 milliliter of ether is added to 50 millileter aqueous solution. This is shaken and then the layers are separated into two different flasks. The flask containing the aqueous solution is added to 25 milliliter of fresh ether. This shaken and separated into two different flasks. The two flasks of ether are then combined together.

    Organic layer is on Bottom:

For the first extraction, 25 milliter of chloromethane is added to 50 millileter of aqueous solution. This is shaken and the chloromethane is emptied into a flask. 25 millileter of fresh chloromethane is added to the aqueous solution from the first extraction. This is shaken and the chloromethane is emptied into a flask. The two flasks of chloromethane are then combined together.
