- Carbonate ion, a moderately strong base, undergoes considerable hydrolysis in aqueous solution. In strongly acidic solution, CO2 gas is evolved.
- Halide Ions (Cl⁻, Br⁻, I⁻)
- These ions are all very weak bases since they are the conjugate bases of very strong acids. Hence, they undergo negligible hydrolysis.
- Phosphate Ion (PO₄³⁻)
- Phosphate ion is a reasonably strong base. It hydrolyzes in water to form a basic solution.
- Sulfate Ion (SO₄²⁻)
- Sulfate ion is a very weak base. Because it is such a weak base, sulfate ion undergoes negligible hydrolysis in aqueous solution.
- Sulfide Ion (S²⁻)
- Sulfide is a strong base, so solutions of sulfide in water are basic, due to hydrolysis. Sulfide solutions develop the characteristic rotten-egg odor of H2S as a result of this hydrolysis.
- Sulfite Ion (SO₃²⁻)
- Sulfite ion is a weak base, but does undergo some hydrolysis to produce basic solutions. In acidic solution, the equilibria are shifted to form sulfurous acid, resulting in the evolution of SO2 gas. Sulfur dioxide is a colorless gas with a characteristic choking odor.
