  • The words upfield and downfield are used to compare chemical shifts of nuclei in molecules qualitatively.

     

     

    eg:

     

     

    The chemical shift of Hb is higher than that of Ha.  Thus, Hb appears downfield from Ha, or Ha appears upfield from Hb.
