Q: Can pathogens that harm the plants or fish be cleaned out of the water system? -Keren P.

A: UV light can kill the pathogens in the water system quite effectively but will kill all good microbes. There is research potential in using a self sufficient biome to manage pathogens with solutions from nature (generally microbes but could even be a piece of coral in some cases). A single hypothesis could be done just about one type of pathogen and trials with different treatments...so from a microbiology perspective there could be many more possibilities with other species. Maybe you could bring it up in class Wed. and we can brain storm with the group. - Ryan G
