In the sciences and engineering the process of decomposing a function into simpler pieces is often called an analysis. The corresponding operation of rebuilding the function from these pieces is known as synthesis. In this context the term Fourier synthesis describes the act of rebuilding and the term Fourier analysis describes the process of decomposing the function.

Hence, the transform converts time-domain data into frequency-domain data (and vice versa). This decomposion of a function into sinusoids of different frequencies is a powerful approach to many experimental and theoretical problems.

It is a unique powerful tool for spectroscopists because a variety of spectroscopic studies are dealing with electromagnetic waves covering a wide range of frequency.
