The activities in this section can be done by individuals in a kitchen or in a dorm room. There has to be access to clean water and to a sink. Many of the materials needed are shown below (all of them are available in a grocery store or online to the general public). You should have a way to record data (e.g. pencil and paper), to analyze data (access to a spread sheet), and you need scissors and clear tape. Also required for some experiments are a glass or shallow bowl, vinegar, flour, a timer and a camera.
The kit fits into a snack-sized zip lock bag.
If contains (from left to right, top to bottom):
- Two snack-sized bags, one with some play dough.
- 3 tubes (1.5 mL) containing soaps, 4 empty tubes of the same size
- 2 transfer pipettes, three tubes containing Povidone (iodine solution), blue food coloring and starch (all diluted with water)
- 2 tubes (15 mL, with blue cap) containing various solids (listed below)
The tubes contain the following:
- pH strips (plastic, 4), pH strips (paper, 4), flat toothpicks (~10), scale for transfer pipette
- steel wool
