Materials

600ml Beaker

Magnetic Stir Plate

Magnetic Stir Bar

Premeaured Solutions (A, B , C, D, E and F)

Solutions

Solution A: 0.5M Potassium Bromate (KBrO3) 150ml ( 41.8g in 500ml DI water)

Solution B 6M Sulfuric Acid 15ml (84.2 ml in 250ml Di water)

Solution C: 0.5M Malonic acid 62.5ml (13g in 250ml DI water)
Solution D 0.5M Potassium Bromide (KBr) 25ml (6g in 100ml DI water)

Solution D: 0.019M Cerium Ammonium nitrate (Ce(NH4)2 (NO3)6) in 2.7M Sulfuric Acid (H2SO4)

62.5ml (112ml of 3M H2SO4, dilute to 250ml with DI water + 2.6g Cerium Ammonium Nitrate

Solution F: Ferroin Indicator 25ml

Procedure

  1. Add solutions A,B, and C into a 600ml beaker with a magnetic stirrer. Stir for atleast 5 minutes. (Color change from a dark yellow to light yellow will be observed.
  2. Add solutions D,E and F then stir for 30 seconds.
  3. Color changes from green to purple to rusty red to blink of blue (if you blink you miss the blue) and finally back to gorgeous green. Cycle takes ~1 min, with the cycle lengthening with time.
