Procedure:
- Hold the copper rod with the tongs and heat it with the torch until very hot
- Open the soda bottle (can ask for a student volunteer)
- Drop the rod into the bottle and stand back
- A fountain of foam will shoot out of the bottle
- Clean any spills quickly to avoid leaving a sticky mess
Discussion:
The solubility of gases decreases as the solvent temperature increases. Dropping the heated rod into the soda quickly raises the temperature. Carbon Dioxide’s solubility rapidly decreases causing gas to be quickly released along with plenty of foam.
Hazards:
Left over soda can be flushed down the drain. Be sure to clean everything thoroughly.
