    Nucleophilic Substitution is a versatile reaction for exchanging a Leaving Group for a Nucleophile.  There are two main ways this reaction can occur: SN1 via a carbocation intermediate, and SN2 which is concerted and does not involve a carbocation. Since both Nucleophilic Substitution reactions and Elimination reactions involve compounds that have a leaving group, the Elimination and Substitution pathways can be competing reactions.
