8.01 Functional Group Transformation by Nucleophilic Substitution

  • Nucleophiles are often anion, but not necessarily.

    Some examples:

    Alkoxide ions

    carboxylate ions

    cyanide ion

    azide ion

Nucleophilic Substitution - leaving group must be on an sp3-hypridized carbon. If the Leaving group is on an sp2-hybridized carbon Nucleophilic substitution will not occur.
