The glycerol also enters the bloodstream and is absorbed by the liver or kidney where it is converted to glycerol 3-phosphate by the enzyme glycerol kinase, and the resulting glycerol 3-phosphate is oxidized to dihydroxyacetone phosphate by the enzyme glycerol-3-phosphate dehydrogenase:

The glycolytic enzyme triose phosphate isomerase converts dihydroxyacetone phosphate to glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate, which is oxidized via glycolysis, or converted to glucose via gluconeogenesis.
