Alkenes can be easily obtained by hydrogenation of alkynes. An alkyne on controlled hydrogenation with hydrogen in the presence of Ni or Pd at 200°C give a corresponding alkene.
\[\ce{C_{n}H_{2n-2} + H_2 ->[Ni, 200 C] C_{n}H_{2n}}\]
Example
Ethyne gives ethene on hydrogenation.
