Reducing Agent

A reducing agent or reductant is a reagent employed to reduce (see, reduction) a given species. In the reaction between the reducing agent and the species, the reducing agent is oxidized (see oxidation).
eg: reduction of an aldehyde to an alkoxide ion by ¯BH4.
