Alkyl Group

An alkyl group (symbol: R) is the fragment, containing a vacant point of attachment, that would form if a hydrogen atom were removed from the molecule of an alkane.

Organic chemists casually refer to a fragment derived by removing a hydrogen atom from an sp³-hybridized carbon atom in the molecule of any hydrocarbon as alkyl group.
