    Nomenclature: Ketones and Aldehydes

Ketones (R-CO-R) take the suffix "-one" with a position number: \(CH_3CH_2CH_2COCH_3\) is pentan-2-one. Aldehydes (R-CO-H) take the suffix "-al": \(CH_3CH_2CH_2COH\) is butanal. If a higher precedence suffix is in use, the prefix "oxo-" is used: \(CH_3CH_2CH_2COCH_2CHO\) is 3-oxohexanal.

Complete the names in the figure below:

    Additional Nomenclature Problems: •

Draw structures for the following IUPAC names:

    2-heptanone

    3-methylhexanal

    2(S)-chloropentanal

    2-methyl-3-oxo-butanal

    2,4-pentanedione

    (Z)-5-bromo-4-hexen-3-one
