When people use this word in the lab, they might just mean that something didn't work, or that a chemical reacted in an unwanted way, especially while it was sitting in a bottle for a long time. For instance, when heated or struck, a salt of a complex anion (chlorate, carbonate, azide) may lose a gas (oxygen, carbon dioxide or nitrogen) leaving behind a simpler salt or metal.

Our aim will be to understand the general dependence of the behavior of alkyl ligands on the metal center and the ligand’s substituents. Using this knowledge, we can make meaningful comparisons between related metal alkyl complexes and educated predictions about their likely behavior.

It outlines different reaction types: synthesis, decomposition, replacement, and combustion. It highlights energy dynamics, distinguishing between exothermic reactions (releasing more energy) and endothermic reactions (absorbing more energy). These concepts are essential for understanding chemistry.

It also explains the decomposition of calcium carbonate into calcium oxide and carbon dioxide, which requires temperatures exceeding approximately 835°C. Below this temperature, the products are not detectable, but measurable carbon dioxide is produced above 700°C. The quicklime production process leverages the removal of carbon dioxide to favor product formation.
