Preface

This manual contains instructions for the laboratory experiments that you will perform in Chemistry 004A. The experiments are designed to teach you a variety of laboratory and data analysis techniques. These instructions are meant to guide you in doing the experiments and interpreting data. You must read and understand the assigned experiment, and any relevant sections of the lecture text, before coming to the laboratory. You cannot perform the experiments safely and correctly nor make effective use of your laboratory time without such advance preparation.

Acknowledgments

This manual is the culmination of the efforts of many individuals. Many faculty members have provided ideas for the creation of these laboratories and have made numerous suggestions regarding their implementation. Stockroom Dispensary Supervisors, past and present, have had a role in helping to develop these experiments and, in particular, helping to ensure that the experiments are tailored to our laboratories at UC Davis. Safety TAs, past and present, have edited this manual to ensure that the experimental procedures are clear and current. In addition, many undergraduates have been involved in the development of these experiments and the completion of this lab manual as part of their undergraduate research projects.
