- To draw reactions consisting of alcohols with aldehyds or ketones.
An alcohol can be added to an aldehyde with an acid catalyst to form an hemiacetal.
Reaction a:
If an alcohol is added to a ketone with an acid catalyst, a hemiketal will be produced.
Reaction b:
Exercise \(\PageIndex{1}\)
1. Redraw the above reactions and label the reactant aldehyde, ketone, and alcohol. Label the hemiacetal and hemiketal products.
Answer
1.a.
b.
The addition of another alcohol to the hemiacetal or hemiketal will produce the acetal or ketal, respectively, along with the formation of water.
Reaction c:
Reaction d:
Exercise \(\PageIndex{2}\)
Redraw the above two reactions (c & d) and label the reactant hemiacetal, hemiketal, and alcohol. Label the acetal and ketal product.
- Answer
-
c.
d.
