Following undergraduate work at Carleton College, the author earned a Ph.D. in physical chemistry at Northwestern University. He taught for several years at the University of California at Riverside, and then spent many years in industrial research and industrial research management. He has authored 16 technical publications and is the inventor on 15 U. S. Patents. Following his retirement, he presented a college-level physical chemistry course for several years at The Oklahoma School of Science and Mathematics. This book arose from his perception that many of the obstacles to understanding the subject can be reduced by increased attention to the background material that is included in the initial presentation. Accordingly, this text sacrifices breadth in order to emphasize basic concepts and clarify them by treating them from alternative perspectives.
