GC: Temperature Influence

  • Page ID
  • Exercise – Gas Chromatography

    1. Temperature is the most easily controlled factor influencing separation in GC. Consider the isothermal (45 °C) gas chromatogram below.

      1. What’s the problem with this separation?

      2. Estimate the retention factor (k) for peak #5.

      3. How would you change the isothermal temperature conditions to improve the retention factor for peak #5? Draw the resulting chromatogram with peaks labeled.

      4. What would be the downside to the change you proposed in part (c)? [Hint: consider what happens to peaks #1-4]
