  • In mass spectroscopy, the molecular ion, formed when an electron is removed from the sample molecule, being a free radical, is unstable and, therefore, breaks down into two or more smaller pieces, called fragments.  The fragments so formed may break down into even smaller fragments.  The breaking down of the molecular ion into fragments is known as fragmentation.
