In the corundum structure, 2/3 of the octahedral cavities in the hcp array of oxygen atoms are occupied by M 3+ . Of the two forms of alumina, Al 2 O 3 , α alumina and (\gamma\) alumina, α alumina takes the corundum structure and is very hard.
