Traits that are controlled by genes on the sex chromosomes are called sex-linked genes. Start by watching this video on Sex-Linked Traits, by Khan Academy.
In humans genes on the Y chromosome are responsible for the development of male offspring, the X chromosome because it is so much larger than the Y chromosome and because it carries so much more information has a greater influence on phenotype.
Take the time to read about sex-linked traits and inheritance, on the Biological Basis of Heredity page, Sex Linked Genes.
