- Be able to draw and explain atomic energy level diagrams. Be able to indicate atomic absorption and atomic emission (fluorescence) on the diagram, AES web page, (History & Theory, energy level diagrams).
- Understand phenomena contributing to atomic spectral line width, i.e. Doppler and pressure broadening.
- Be able to explain the effects of temperature on atomic spectra, i.e. Boltzmann equation.
- Be able to explain the functionality of an atomizer and be able to describe how samples (solid and aqueous) are prepared for eventual atomization. (Introduction of analyte (electrothermal vaporization and nebulizers)).
