scales_PNG43.pngOne of the reasons we present general and organic chemistry in an integrated fashion, is that they are two sides of the same coin: the conceptual and quantitative concepts both describe the underlying molecular nature of matter and complement one another. Too much or too little of either one leads to a distorted view of what chemistry is really about. The first chapter focused on more conceptual points: the nature of organic compounds generally, with alkanes given particular emphasis.  In this chapter, we shift our attention to more quantitative ideas. If you’ve already had chemistry, some of this section should be review for you, but please review it to ensure that any lingering questions or misconceptions from your previous courses can be resolved and/or clarified. Even if some of the concepts are familiar to you, we encourage you to read the chapter carefully anyway - you may find some interesting new ways of applying concepts you've seen before, so don't assume that it is all old news.
