The main purpose of the unit was to discuss the preparation and nomenclature of alkyl halides. The concept of resonance was introduced, and this concept will be used frequently throughout the remainder of the course. Finally, you saw how alkyl halides can react to form two important classes of organometallic compounds: Grignard reagents and organolithiums. The role of the latter in the Corey-House synthesis of alkanes was emphasized; the reactions of Grignard reagents will be discussed later. The section titled, “Summary of Reactions” (Organic Chemistry, 8th ed., pp. 364-365) provides a list of all the reactions you encountered in Unit 10. You will see that these can be broken down into two basic categories: the preparation of alkyl halides, and the reactions of alkyl
halides. Practice writing out equations for these reactions using a variety of starting materials. Test your overall understanding of the unit by completing some of the additional problems listed on pages 366-371.
