    ...Remember that calcium is in Group IA and will not have an octet of electrons!

    The hybridization for calcium will be sp. (The hybridization for the chlorine atoms will be sp3.)

    The chlorine-calcium-chlorine bond angle is 180o.

    Calcium has two p orbitals that are empty which explains why anhydrous calcium chloride is a great drying agent found in those little packages in bottles of pills, cameras, etc...the non-bonding electron pairs of water attach at those sites.

    The electron-pair geometry is linear.

    The molecular geometry is linear.
