This course is meant to introduce you to some basic concepts in chemistry. Chemistry is often called the central science because it has elements (pun intended) from other sciences such as mathematics, physics, biology, and geology. Of those sciences, math is critical for doing chemistry. Why? Because chemistry uses numbers from measurements. You’ll get a chance to make measurements in the lab part of the course, and to solve problems with numbers. Before you do, though, and before we start talking about chemistry, I need you to review some basic math skills that will help you as you move through the course.
There are two goals for this chapter. The first goal goal is to help you lay a foundation for success in this course. The second goal is to dust the cobwebs off math concepts you’ve seen before but maybe haven’t used in a while. It’s based on my observations having taught chemistry for a while, and I think it will help you as we move on to the more fun parts of the course. The math review has been pulled from Khan Academy, which is a great resource for brushing up on educational topics (for free!). It’s not a substitute for coming to my office hours, talking to me, or using our STEM Tutoring and Learning Center, but I think it’s really helpful.
