    1. Disconnect to intermediates of equal size and/or complexity. (Convergence)
    2. Disconnect at branch points (stereochemistry)
    3. Use functional groups present
    4. Disconnect at heteroatom-C-bonds
    5. Disconnect to the simplest material possible (commercially available)
    6. Reduce ring complexity
