    Chemistry is an experimental science and it is important that students of chemistry do laboratory experiments to more fully understand that the theories they study in lecture and in their textbook are developed from critical evaluation of experimental data. The laboratory can also aid the student in the study of science by clearly illustrating the principles and concepts involved. Finally, laboratory experimentation allows students the opportunity to develop techniques and other manipulative skills the students of science must master. The sequence of experiments in this Laboratory Manual is designed to follow the lecture curriculum. It is important that you carefully prepare for each experiment by reading the related text material before coming to laboratory. In this way, you will be able to take full advantage of this opportunity to explore the science of chemistry and maximize the laboratory experience.

    Questions are presented throughout each experiment. It is important that you try to answer each question as it appears, it will help you understand the experiment as you do it. We view this manual as one of the continual modifications and improvement. Over the past few years many improvements have come from students’ comments and criticism. We encourage you to discuss ideas for improvement or suggestions for new experiments with your TA. Finally, we hope you find this laboratory manual helpful in your study of chemistry.
