    • 1A.1: Chemistry and its Methods
    • 1A.2: Sustainability and Green Chemistry
    • 1A.3: Classifying Matter
Matter has mass, occupies space and exists in different states that are determined by its energy. There are four fundamental states of matter that are observable in everyday life: solid, liquid, gas, and plasma. However, other states are known to exist in extreme situations. In this class we will study the first three, but you need to be aware of all four of the fundamental states.
    • 1A.4: Elements
    • 1A.5: Compounds
Compounds occur when two or more atoms combine into a pure substance. These can be broken down into their constituent atoms. In chemical reactions the atoms of the reactants interact to form new substances. The reacting species are called reactants, and those produced are products. Reactant and products can be either elements or compounds. Compounds are held together by chemical bonds.
    • 1A.6: Physical Properties
Physical properties are are typically observable properties that describe the physical state of matter. In contrast, chemical properties describe the chemical arrangement, composition and reactivity of matter.
    • 1A.7: Physical and Chemical Changes
    • 1A.8: Energy: Some Basic Principles
