Materials
- 10 - 24 hole well plates
- Plastic beral pipets – 8mL
- Toothpicks
- Two hotplates, set up in each hood with 800 mL beakers on them
Chemicals
Prepare 5 sets and place part one and two on one end of bench and part three on the other end.
Part I
- 1 L 0.1 M NaHSO4 sodium hydrogen sulfate
- 1 L 0.1 M Na2SO4 sodium sulfate
- 20 g Solid NaHSO4 sodium hydrogen sulfate
- 200 mL Thymol blue indicator solution
Part II
- 1 L 1.0 M MgCl2 magnesium chloride
- 500 mL 0.5 M NaOH sodium hydroxide
- 500 mL 0.5M Na4EDTA sodium EDTA
- 200 mL Phenolphtlalein indicator solution
Part III
- 500 mL 0.15 M CoCl2 in methanol - (the CoCl2 must be placed in the oven for at least 24 hours before making up the solution. It must not be in the hydrated form.) – Leftovers are in the flammable cabinet
- 20 g CaCl2 solid
- 500 mL 0.1 M AgNO3
Place in two bottles, one in each hood.
200 mL Concentrated hydrochloric acid
Waste bottles needed for part III only. Please label with those chemicals.
