    In mammals, O2 is transported from the respiratory system by the blood, and specifically by a protein in erythrocytes (red blood cells) called hemoglobin and stored in tissues by a protein called myoglobin. Hemoglobin and myoglobin has some close parallels in their structures that allow them to serve similar, but complimentary roles in oxygen transport and storage.
