Group Pressure to Conform How do groups affect our behavior? Is your behavior different in a group or peers? How about in a group of the elderly? Social psychologists study the various influences that operate in the simplest groups. Solomon Asch is a social psychologist who studied group conformity. He devised a simple test that asked people which of three comparison lines was comparable to a standard line of measurement. For example, he had a group of subjects view a card which had a line on the left side. On the right side of the card were three lines, each a different length. When the subjects were asked which line on the "right"’ side of the card matched the line on the "left", the subjects gave the answers that their group said even if the group’s answer was incorrect. Solomon Asch: World-renowned psychologist and pioneer in social psychology who became famous in the 1950s, following experiments which showed that social pressure can make a person say something that is obviously incorrect.
