    The world is affected by various things and events, but people also shape and mold the world. There are many people in the recent past that have affected future generations. Below are just a few people who have affected the lives of many Americans.


    What have they done?

    Cesar Chavez

    As a child was a migrant farm worker who fought for the rights of other migrant farm workers.

    Shirley Chisholm

    The first African-American woman to serve in Congress.

    Hillary Clinton

    The "first" first lady to run for and be elected to a national political office. She was elected a senator in New York State in 2000.

    Bill Gates

    The founder of Microsoft and a very generous and wealthy individual. Visit The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to find out more about the causes he and his wife support.

    Ted Turner

    A big shot in the media business. CNN and other channels were started by this amazing communications leader.

    Oprah Winfrey

    A media giant and a household name. Her talk show has promoted literacy and many other worthwhile causes. She is an extremely wealthy woman who uses her wealth, power, and influence to bring about change in the world.

    Justice Sandra Day O'Connor

    First female Supreme Court Justice who had an instrumental role in the guidance of the Supreme Court for over 20 years.

    Newt Gingrich(Newton Leroy)

    Architect of the "Contract with America" and was instrumental in the Republican takeover of the House of Representatives for the first time in 50 years.

    Jeane Kirkpatrick
    (Duane Jordan)

    Active in both the Democratic and Republican parties; U.N. Ambassador.

    Pat Buchanan
    (Patrick J.)

    A radical right-wing activist who played a role and affected several presidential elections.

    Justice Clarence Thomas

    Second African-American Supreme Court Justice.

    Elizabeth Dole

    Senator, cabinet member, Director of the American Red Cross.

    Denny Hastert
    (John Dennis)

    The longest serving Republican Speaker of the House.

    Rush (Hudson) Limbaugh

    Radio host/personality who is given credit for rousing conservative sentiment that contributed to the Republican capture of the House of Representatives in 1994.

    Write a five-paragraph essay on one of the individuals listed above. You may also choose your own individual from one of the decades previously discussed but the instructor must first approve it.

    Focus on one individual from the 1970s, 1980s, 1990s, or early 2000s that has made an impact on the American people.

    The introductory paragraph of this essay should focus on some general information about your chosen person, as well as general information about the era this person affected so greatly. The body of your essay should focus on three of this person's major accomplishments and how he or she has affected future generations. Conclude your essay by defining how one individual can make a difference.
