Welcome to Unit 4 Session 4.  In this session, you’ll finish reading your science fiction book, discuss the book in your book discussion group, and start the process of creating a contemporary essay on your book.  Here are a few essential questions we'll consider in this session:

-How does a critical lens stretch, compress, and focus a field of view?

-How might I widen the angle and narrow my focus for this writing? What sources should I investigate? What information should I collect?

-Why is it necessary for me to summarize and synthesize information from a variety of sources?

-How do I determine what information should be summarized?

-How do I determine what information should be combined for synthesis?

    Students will be able to...

-Read and comprehend the final quarter of selected science fiction novel.

-Use a critical lens to analyze literary work(s).

-Evaluate sources and information based on credibility, relevance, and appropriateness relative to critical lens and science fiction novel

-Craft an introductory section that previews the characteristics of a critical lens and the essential elements of science fiction novel.

-Develop claim(s) and counterclaims that illustrate the relationship(s) between a critical lens and science fiction novel

-Synthesize the most relevant evidence of a critical lens and literary work(s), pointing out the strengths and limitations of the claim(s) and counterclaims in a manner that anticipates the audience's knowledge level, concerns, values, and possible biases.

-Craft a concluding section that articulates the implications or significance of the analysis.
