    Welcome and Essential Questions

Welcome to Unit 2 Session 3.  In our first session, we reviewed reader response theory and considered how our individual frameworks and experiences impact how we view literature.  In our last session, we explored gender theory and how gender can play a role in the way we interpret literature.

In this session, we'll look at another critical theory, social class theory.  It's all about how a person's wealth, status, and power impact the telling of a story.

Although this will be the last critical theory we'll study in this unit, we'll continue to use reader response theory, gender theory, and class theory to examine and analyze other texts this semester.

Here are a few essential questions we'll consider in this session:

    • Why and how does reading change my thinking?
    • How does a text affect my perspectives? How do my perspectives influence my understanding of a text?
    • Why do readers make sense of texts in different ways?
    • How does constructing a generalization affect my thinking?  What and why do I need to generalize in order to draw a sound conclusion?
    • What clues has the author provided about his/her viewpoint?
    • Why is it worthwhile to deliberate over the domain-specific language used in a text?
