Measuring Earthquakes

    The seismogram to the left is the first 30 seconds of the magnitude 6.9 earthquake that shook the San Francisco and Monterey Bay regions on October 17, 1989. 

    These diagrams are made with an instrument called a seismograph. Analyzing the diagram for length, width and sections gives geologists information about earthquakes.
