Most organisms rely directly or indirectly on photosynthesis and sunlight for their chemical energy. There are few organisms that do not need sunlight and photosynthesis. These organisms rely on chemosynthesis to build carbon-based molecules. This process is similar to photosynthesis, and uses chemical energy instead of light energy.
