Design of an Online Textbook Replacement: a Comprehensive Guide Content, Architecture, and Pedagogy as a Framework for Design.

    • 2.1: What is the framework for design?
When building a LibreTexts page, consider: content, architecture, and pedagogy (CAP) as a framework. A framework is a basic structure underlying a concept, system, or process. In order to maximize learning as a process, we must begin by examining the framework of learning itself -- how we assimilate new knowledge. CAP provides us a starting point to begin to think differently about how we learn.
    • 2.2: Content on LibreTexts
A textbook starts with some thoughts about content. What is it we want to teach? This part of CAP is obviously critical - but it is the least important to discuss in general for a few reasons: (1) Each course within each discipline is different; (2) each professor will want to cover different things in different levels of depth; and (3) it is mostly the same as what you would find in a traditional hardcopy textbook.
    • 2.3: Architecture and Pedagogy in Relation to LibreTexts
When building a LibreTexts course, the layout and design will influence learners and their ability to retain new information. This is both due to how content is laid out within a given page, but also in how to organize the pages into a full set of learning materials. Because online platforms provide the user with greater customization capabilities, we are able to implement psychologically sound architecture principles and pedagogical foundations.
    • 2.4: Multimedia
This section details how to approach the use of Multimedia within a page, as well as how to approach organizing your course through the use of scaffolding and hypertext.
    • 2.5: Scaffolding the Libretext
Scaffolding complexes provide a beneficial structure that aids in the learner’s ability to learn new information, as well as accomplish more difficult tasks by giving directionality to learning.
    • 2.6: Bibliography
      Works cited for Chapter 1.
