📅 Due: The pre-lab assignment must be completed before 1:00 PM on your scheduled lab meeting day (see syllabus schedule).

🕒 Time: Two to three hours in class during our first meeting. Plus, plan 4.5 hours outside of class to complete the reading and to attempt the problems in this assignment.

🎯 Purpose: This pre-meeting assignment is designed to help you arrive to our next meeting prepared to discuss strategies for estimating uncertainty for different types of experimental results, and for correct reporting of values and their uncertainties.  Prepare to participate in the lab meeting by presenting problems on the board, answering questions from your peers, and asking your own questions.

    Pre-lab assignment

In preparation for the lab meeting on Error Analysis, please do the following*:

    1. Read this entire module.
    2. Read D.P. Shoemaker, C.W. Garland and J.W. Nibler, Experiments in Physical Chemistry, 6th Ed., McGraw Hill Co. Inc., New York, 1996, Chapter 2.
    3. Make a sincere attempt (does not mean you must be correct) for all seven problems in the problem set; work should be done in a way that you can track your progress and submit your work in electronic form.
    4. Submit record of your work for all seven problems on Canvas prior to the meeting. Your pre-lab work will be graded based on work shown and evidence of sincere attempt.

Note that the textbooks referenced in this module are available in the Perkins library, and on Canvas in pdf format (or Duke students click here).
We will meet in a classroom, thus lab attire is not necessary for this session.

For our overachievers and those who want more, recommended additional reading includes: D.A. Skoog, D.M. West, F.J. Holler and S.R. Crouch, Analytical Chemistry: An Introduction, 7th Ed., Saunders College Publishing, New York, 2000, Chapters 5-7.
