The first semester General Chemistry topics are grouped into three major “phases” as shown below, based on the increasing level of skill and comprehension that you will need to achieve as you progress through the course. Thus, the first phase involves establishing basic knowledge and comprehension, the second phase involves applying that knowledge to solve problems, and the third phase involves integrating those skills with a deeper understanding of the fundamental properties of matter. The order of topics we discuss in class may vary slightly from the order below—pay attention to in-class announcements and Moodle to know which sections in the book to read next.
