    1. Your instructor has an apparatus set up like the one shown below and will demonstrate this experiment for you.

    2. Pour 200 ml of carbonated water into the suction flask. Connect the vacuum tubing to the vacuum line or the water aspirator. Run the vacuum line/aspirator at full force. This decreases the pressure inside the suction flask. Observe the behavior of the carbonated water at low pressure inside the flask.

    3. Disconnect the vacuum tubing and observe the behavior of the carbonated water. Shut off the vacuum line or water. Dispose of the carbonated water down the sink and reset the apparatus for the next group of students.

    4. Answers questions a through c based on your observations in full sentences.

    a. What did you observe with the carbonated water when the pressure in the flask is decreased?

     

     

    b. Explain your observations with the help of the appropriate gas law.

     

     

    c. Explain how this observation and gas solubility law applies to the medical condition called the “bends”.
